I'm Katherine...Plumber. It's a byline. It's a name that I publish under. And like someone said, "Power tends to corrupt" and absolute power, wait! That is genius! But give me some time, I'll be twice as good as that six months from never.
“Ta be perfectly honest, I was hopin’ to visit the boys.” He’s gotten a room or two of his own since he started drawing for the World, and while it’s great to have your own place, sometimes you miss the people you spent all day with.
“It’s been a while.”
“So what if Santa Fe’s got sandstorms and spiders?” he retorted. “At least the air’s clean and you ain’t crammed into buildings! There’s space. Give it that!”
“How do you know that Santa Fe has a lot of space. It isn’t like New York has family!” She answers him.

He scoffed, turning to look at her. “You’re kiddin’, right? New York’s hell! Everyone’s out for blood. If you want somethin’, you gotta step on someone else’s neck to get it!”
“Jack! You are missing the point!” Katherine crosses her arms, then sighs. “You know, I agree with Davey and whole sandstorms and spiders theory.”

“I hope it ain’t,” he said with a sigh. “I hope there are places that give people fair chances. Where people aren’t stuck in one place because of a bad break. There’s gotta be somethin’ different than New York.”
Oh boy, she thought. “That’s true, but what is wrong with New York!”
“It was a lot o’ you.” His eyes scrolled the page, re-reading her article for the fourth time today. “The boys wanna celebrate tonight at Jacobi’s Deli. You’s the guest of honor.”
“Me? The guest on honor…or horror? Because Jack, those boys…they move whenever I…nevermind.”

He laughed bitterly. “The big city’s a train wreck. You knows I don’t wanna be here.” Still, he retained his low-class dialect of mispronounced words and broken grammar; maybe he was holding himself back.

He smiled softly back. Katherine always thought logically. She kept him focused on reality instead of letting his unease warp it. “They would be, wouldn’t they? Maybe I’m just worryin’ too much. Lettin’ the big city get to me.”
Katherine tilts her head. “Well, Jack just think of it this way. The big city is a step closer to your dreams and aspirations.”
